[WhatsUpUoH] Distinguished talk on 'The story of Helium - the Indian connection'

Sir/ma'am

Astronomy Club, University of Hyderabad, in association with the Public Outreach and Education Committee of the Astronomical Society of India invites you to a talk on 'The story of Helium - the Indian connection' by Prof. Biman Nath, a cosmologist at the Raman Research Institute, Bengaluru.Prof. He is a renowned astronomer, a very well known writer and historian of science.

Date: 9th February, 2018.
Time: 2-3 PM
Venue: C. V. Raman Auditorium, Science Complex

Abstract of the talk:

A new element, helium, was added to the periodic table 150 years ago. It was the first element to have been discovered by astronomers, to be discovered much later on Earth by chemists. The story of the discovery of helium is a fascinating one, with confusions galore about who were involved and how. The speaker will be speaking about the story of how the signature of this element was first detected in India, in Andhra Pradesh, during a solar eclipse in 1868, and how its discovery gave birth to a new area of research, that of astrophysics.

University of Hyderabad
